In October, three years after having her second child, Dominique went under the knife.
The Ottawa mother found herself in a different body after the births of her daughters. She had a herniated belly button, stretched skin and separated abdominal muscles. When she looked in the mirror, she couldn’t see anything beyond the sagging skin on her belly.
“It was like a soufflĂ© that had de-soufflĂ©d,” Dominique says with a laugh. She felt she looked about six months pregnant — and on more than one occasion people had asked when her baby was due.
For Dominique, the only solution was surgery.
She is not alone. Dominique is part of a growing trend in Ottawa and across North America — the “mommy makeover,” plastic surgery to reverse the effects of having children. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that in 2007 more than 325,000 new mothers in the U.S. underwent the procedure. Google “mommy makeover,” and you’ll get at least six advertisements.
