Report from IBISWorld Inspired by Booming Plastic Surgery Industry
Interest in cosmetic surgery continues to climb as technological advancements make procedures more accessible, more affordable and safer. Cosmetic surgery is no longer reserved for the wealthy or famous; most cities in the United States are home to plastic surgery centers, offering body contouring procedures from liposuction and breast augmentation to facial rejuvenation, laser hair removal, eyelid surgery, chin and cheek implants and other innovative enhancements. Additionally, MedChoice Financial, one of the largest and fastest-growing elective medical financing companies nationwide, reports that elective cosmetic surgery financing is more prevalent now, and there are many more flexible patient-client payment programs available. For these reasons, industry research firm IBISWorld has added the Plastic Surgeons industry report to its growing Life Sciences collection. 
Plastic surgeon practices tend to be very small, but they have been getting larger. According to the latest research from IBISWorld, major players in the plastic surgeons industry include Aesthetic Center for Plastic Surgery, BioForm Medical Group and Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. The main products offered by these companies, and covered in-depth in IBISWorld’s latest report findings, include surgical services, nonsurgical dermal fillers, nonsurgical laser hair removal and nonsurgical skin resurfacing.
There are about 17 million cosmetic surgery procedures performed in the United States – and that number has continued to grow even with the economic recession. “The rise in cosmetic surgeries is largely due to the aging baby boomers and their desire to preserve their youth and health,” says IBISWorld lead industry analyst Sophia Snyder. “In addition, there’s a greater number of younger women interested in silicone implants since the Food and Drug Administration approved silicone implants for unrestricted use in 2007 after an exhaustive study.” Snyder anticipates that as consumers become more educated about the advantages of next-generation silicone implants, plastic surgeons will receive more frequent requests from patients for silicone.
